Legal Aid- Myth Uncovered

Posted on

We have previously published a post regarding legal aid generally entitled ‘Legal Aid – Your Rights Uncovered’.

We have recently become aware of a myth surrounding legal aid availability for victims of domestic violence.  It would appear that people are being told they must attend a domestic violence support service to be able to get advice under the Legal Aid scheme.  This is not correct.  Domestic violence support services in this area offer a fantastic service in terms of support, counselling, referrals to refuges etc.  They do not have a Legal Aid Franchise enabling them to give advice under Legal Aid scheme however they can refer you to a Solicitor who may even meet you at their venue rather than you having to come to a solicitor’s office.

Should you have any queries regarding the availability of legal aid or if you are concerned about a friend or family member please do not hesitate to contact one of our Family Department Members who will give detailed advice and guidance regarding funding options.
